Over the years, we at Runtex have worked with many people who want to become runners or to participate in an endurance event. We have observed that one particular attribute usually indicates success: Teamwork. I can't stress enough how important it is to be part of a group. Those who try to do it alone almost always find it difficult. The group environment provides encouragement, support and learning from one another that's lacking in training solo.
So, if you want to get into shape, think about putting together a group of friends or co-workers who are willing to work with you toward the same goals. The concept is simple but powerful.
You should try to get 12 people in your group. That
way, given everyone's schedule, there are enough in the group
that you're more likely to have someone show up each and every
session. At first you may want to meet two-to-three times a
week to get things going while everyone is enthusiastic. If you
want, arrange for a RunTex coach too at a minimum cost to
conduct an introductory seminar to kick it off or meet you once
a week for your workouts. Have a simple goal: Training for a
fun 5K that is three-to-four months away.
The support you gain from the group is magical. You will find
that when you look back at the journey, the memories are based
around the conversations, common effort and accomplishment.
Every team has a captain -- so be the leader, invite the
friends and co-workers and get started. Have a lunch to pitch
the idea. Some of the tricks are to show a simple plan, like
starting with a mile a day. Select a team name, maybe even team
t-shirts.
Your company may even sponsor your efforts. We are working with
dozens of companies in Austin that do just that through the
Runtex
University program. So, step up, make a list of potential
team members, go to the Runtex calendar to find
the best event four months from now, register and then send
e-vites to the group. If you want assistance from us, email me
at paul@runtex.com.
As they say, the most important step is the first
one.
