If you have adopted a new way
of living, gotten fit, eaten right and this is your first
holiday season, you may be nervous or confused about how to be
polite, have fun, go to parties and not blow all of your hard
work. After all, this is the time of year to have fun. You
should celebrate and enjoy family, friends, and food and try to
keep your routine so you dont lose any fitness. But don't be so
uptight about it that you damage your relationships. Use it as
a good time to lead by example to the people around you.
Plan your activities to be outdoors and full of fun. Make sure
everyone goes for a walk before they sit down to the big meal,
or before dessert. Don't make them walk five miles if they
aren't used to it, but a nice walk around the neighborhood or
in a park is a perfect way to entertain. If you have kids in
the house, make sure you get them to the park to play before
they have to behave with company for hours.
When making food choices, be sure there is a vegetable plate
for appetizers, salad for dinner, broiled options, grilled
vegetables or sorbets for dessert. You can be a great host and
a great friend by showing people how to party and not set
yourself back on all your progress.
Most importantly, be an evangelist about your success story.
Take time to brag a little and tell others how you started
easy, found a friend to work out with, started choosing more
nutritious foods and didnt have to diet. Tell them about your
first 5K and how good it made you feel about yourself, for not
only getting in shape, but for achieving your goal. Don't
forget to tell them the best part... shopping for new
clothes.
It is up to you to decide how to balance your holiday schedule,
your fitness, your food, and your family. When it is all said
and done, you should feel like you maintained your health
status, set a great example and made your family proud of you
and asking questions about how to get started
themselves.
