THE FACTS:

  • 1.8 million Texans (10% of our population) have diabetes. 
  • 460,000 adult Texans are believed to have diabetes and are not yet diagnosed.
  • Up to 25% of all adults will develop diabetes at some point in their life.

GOOD NEWS!  
Healthy habits can reduce your individual risk of developing diabetes. A condition called pre-diabetes indicates changes in your body that can progress to diabetes if not managed. Research shows that weight loss, exercise and healthy diet can significantly impact your future if you have pre-diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance or metabolic syndrome.

 INTENDED AUDIENCE:  

  • Persons with pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance
  • Persons with metabolic syndrome
  • Persons at risk of developing diabetes
    • Strong family history of type 2 diabetes
    • History of gestational diabetes
    • Overweight
    • Physical Inactivity
    • Over 45 years of age
    • Abnormal lipids (especially high triglycerides or low HDL)
    • High blood pressure
    • Ethnicity—persons of African American, Hispanic, Asian American or Native American descent are at higher risk
