Flaxseed is the most highly concentrated plant source of alpha linolenic acid, an omega 3 fatty acid similar to that found in salmon and other fatty fish therefore providing an alternative to vegetarians to get omega 3 fatty acids in their diet. Flaxseed has been shown in many studies to offer heart healthy benefits by lowering total and LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). It may also help lower triglycerides and blood pressure as well as keep platelets from becoming sticky reducing the chance of a heart attack.

Flaxseed also contains fiber and lignan, a type of antioxidant phytoestrogen which may include a possible role in cancer prevention. Flaxseed OIL does not have the benefits of fiber and lignan.

Flaxseed needs to be ground in order to be absorpable by the body. You can ground flaxseed in a coffee bean grinder and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Your breads, cereals, and bakery goods may already contain flaxseed if made from flaxseed flour. You can sprinkle ground flaxseed on cereals or salads, as well as mix it into dressings or condiments. Substitute flaxseed oil for other oils as long as your not cooking with high heat.

While there is no RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) set for Omega 3 Fatty Acids, there are established AI (adequate intake) amounts at 1.6 grams for men and 1.1 grams for women per day. One and a half teaspoons of ground flaxseed will provide approximately 1 gram of Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

Walnuts and soybeans are other options for getting omega 3 fatty acids.
