Answer
Stretch marks, or 'striae' are caused by thinning skin or an expansion of the skin, often occurring after rapid times of growth such as a pregnancy. Recent studies have shown that the risk of developing striae during pregnancy is more related to a family history of striae than the actual size of the pregnancy.
Unfortunately, there is no easy 'cure' for stretch marks, and no way to eliminate them 100 percent.. That being said, the redness and itchiness of striae can be minimized somewhat with the use of some of the newer lasers. See your dermatologist or skin care professional to discuss this further.
