Answer
If you believe you or someone else is having a heart attack, always call 9-1-1. While you are waiting for EMS services to arrive, have the person:
- Concentrate on deliberate and slow breaths - in through the nose and out through the mouth.
- Sit down or lie down and elevate the legs.
- Take one full-strength (325 mg) aspirin or four baby (81 mg) aspirin, if the person is not allergic.
- Remove or loosen any tight-fitting clothing, as this will keep the person more comfortable.
- Remove the person having the heart attack from a crowd.
- Try to keep the person calm as discomfort can worsen with anxiety. Remember that help is on the way.
