The flu shot is meant to protect you from the most common strains of virus that can cause the flu. The companies who make the flu shot rely on the previous year's flu cases to judge what types to include in this year's shot.
Unfortunately, it can't protect you from ALL the viruses that can cause the flu but it does seem to lessen the severity of the flu if you still get it. Being treated early with an antiviral such as Tamiflu also helps shorten the duration and severity of the flu if taken early.
