Answer

Studies have shown clear association between excess alcohol intake and development of hypertension. Patients who have more than 2 drinks per day have a 1.5 - 2 fold increase of hypertension compared to non drinkers. On the other hand moderate alcohol (3 - 9 glasses a week) consumption decreases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Each blood pressure medication has a different side effect profile, and should ask your physician about how alcohol effects the medication.

My blood pressure has suddenly risen to levels of 180 over 115. The doctor has put me on a blood pressure medication. I have always had a few after-dinner drinks. Does alcohol interfere with blood pressure medication?
