The latest addition to the City of Austin's extensive system of parks and trails is located in the Mueller Development, the growing planned community located on the site of the former Robert Mueller Airport. The community is a showcase for green building and it's 140-acres of parks and green space include five miles of looping hike and bike trails and green space throughout the development. If you are looking for a new place for outdoor activities, check this out.
The system includes five miles of new hike and bike paths woven through the community, graced by 15,000 newly planted trees. They emphasize native ecosystems and developers believe once everything is completed, no resident will live less than 600 feet away from a community green space. Mueller area parks formally opened to the public last fall for visitors with a series of public events. Now almost every evening, families with children can be found on playscapes or on the trails. You are welcome to join them. Highlights include:
Lake Park
Thirty acres of park space provide stretching facilities for joggers, a looping trail, interactive playscapes and an open air amphitheater.Southwest Greenway
Trails wind through a natural setting that includes native plants, waterfalls and nature-inspired public art, developed in collaboration with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. It includes restoration of native Blackland Prairie plants with educational markers that inform children and families about the endangered ecosystem and prairies of Central Texas.
Neighborhood Parks
Mueller will have five neighborhood parks once they all are completed, including the communitys first park, the Northwest Greenway It features hundreds of mature pecan and oak trees, native landscaping, picnic tables, benches, recycling bins and drinking fountains for trail users and their pets. Planned not only for fun, but also with a purpose, these parks protect the watershed and mitigate the urban heat island effect. Once all the parks are completed.
